So what is it? |
|
|
| For
many people even after two centuries of modern hypnosis
there remain many fears and misunderstandings about the use of hypnosis and
hypnotherapy. These pages will help to reassure you that what happens in hypnosis is very normal even scientific and certainly far from the near mystical experience that some fear it may be. In the modern therapeutic setting, hypnotherapy is literally, therapy whilst in a hypnotic state.
Will I lose control? The client does not lose control in a therapeutic setting; just as we do not lose control when we are deeply engrossed in watching a film. For that time and in that situation we choose to go along with the suggestions of either the Hypnotist or the film maker. (You don't still think that Star Wars is 'real' do you?) In hypnotherapy the Therapist and Client work together to make positives changes in the Client's life. Hypnosis is an entirely natural state and we have all been hypnotised many, many times even if we have not recognised it as such. Daydreaming whilst performing a dull task, imagining new situations when drifting off to sleep or just waking up, are all natural instances of hypnotic type states. Hypnosis can be thought of as total concentration on a single thought or idea, an increased awareness of one’s own body, enhanced mental imagery, a literal acceptance of suggestion and often a feeling of physical relaxation. Recent research has shown that whilst in the hypnotic state our brain wave frequencies change (they can be measured by an EEG machine). The higher frequency Beta waves tend to diminish and the lower frequency Alpha and Delta waves remain. These lower frequency wave have been linked by some to the unconscious part of the mind linked with our emotions. These emotions are the root of our actions. So not so much magic and mysticism as a science of the mind! |
